Compact flash card readers

Postby Guest » 10 Nov 2011 12:44

I have used Vali-flash successfully with a memorex card reader. That card reader was misplaced at the last casino I was at. Since then I purcashed a SanDisk reader/writer. It said no diver installed needed for windows 2000 which I am using. The program Vali-flash recognizes the drive and the card and the card size. When I click the validate button however its starts to read the card but when it reaches the proper size say 64mb the status bar drops back a little and it continues to read so at 65536 it then says reading 65536 of 81XXX and then when it reaches the 81XXX it does the same status bar drops back and then it continues to read. It never does show the sha1 or the crc32 readings at least I ve always stopped it it has gone as high as 10x64mb. why is this happening and how do i fix it?

Hi,

Short Answer:

Thank you for your question regarding ValiFlash. The problem that you are describing is a known problem. Currently the included Memorex CompactFlash card reader, part number 3250-8200, is known to work with all versions of Vali-Flash (2.0 and 3.0).
You may purchase this reader directly from us or from a local retailer, which ever is most convenient. Our list price is $29.00 USD plus S/H.

Long Answer:

Our goal is for maximum interoperability with all CF readers; however, problems have recently cropped up in the design of the common reader and in the way that ValiFlash interfaces with it. ValiFlash accesses the device at the lowest level possible and reads the data as an array of contiguous bytes without regard to files and/or directory structure. This gives our customers the ability to use any file system or format (even a custom format) without concern for support. The problem is that different compact flash card readers respond differently to ValiFlash. The problem with your particular reader is that it will never return an end of file condition to ValiFlash so thus it continues to read the device ad infinitum

The Dataman development team is actively seeking a solution to this very problem. Our solution will involve two parts. The first part involves certifying compact flash card readers that are known to work. The second part of the solution is to change the code so that it will access the compact flash in a slightly different way; however, this will _not_ change the resultant signatures. This solution is currently underway.

I was able to use the Memorex CompactFlash card reader until recently but now I cannot get past the opening screen on Vali-Flash (E Version 3.0 for Windows 2000/XP) to validate. I have only the File, Database and Help icons on the tool bar. The laptop I use is a Dell Latitude C610 with Windows 2000 Professional, so why am I not able to use the card reader any longer?

The message in the Device box says "No CompactFlash found". Could it be that I just need a new card reader?

Is there a specific way that the laptop and cardreader should be setup? I am open to suggestions.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Hi,

Dataman Vali-Flash 3.0 uses the (USB) Mass Storage driver native to the Microsoft Windows® operating system. Once a card reader is installed, the Windows® operating system will add the new hardware and present the card reader to the system. In order for Dataman Vali-Flash to access the reader, a card must be inserted; the user must have administrative privileges, and the device must be compatible.

The Memorex® card reader you mention is compatible with Vali-Flash. Please also click the refresh-drive list after you have inserted a card in order to enumerate the aforesaid card. To further troubleshoot the card reader please check your system properties and under device manager, ensure that the card reader is listed and there are no hardware conflicts.

If you have a blank card, try inserting that card and then adding some files with the Microsoft Windows® Explorer into your removable drive. If you have problems adding/removing files on a formatted card then most likely your card reader is bad. Broken pins on the card reader are common and easy to detect.

To date, there have been no reported problems with Vali-Flash 3.0 detecting card readers. If you continue to have problems or if you have any questions please contact us at 1-800-328-2336 or feel free add an additional post to this forum.

Neil
