Fairchild 93C46 serial eprom burn problem

Postby Guest » 14 Nov 2011 16:44

Hi
I have connected a fairchild 93C46 serial eprom to the S4, using the Amtel 93c46 prom support, it reads the data out just fine, but i cannot seem to be able to program the device with a change of data in any location, the s4 just says ram = ?? rom =xx and of course the numbers dont match as it wont program the device.
I stuiply pressed function burn and erase? came up to which i brainlessley pressed ok, the device erased and is now empty (FF), but i cannot load data back into the device! so i now have a blank device with no way of getting data back into it

any ideas as i am stuck and need the data back in the device!!

cheers
Andrew

Hello Andrew

First it might be a good idea to transfer the data from the S4 to your PC for safekeeping in case anything happens to the data in the S4 RAM.

There is not a specific selection in the S4 library for the Fairchild 93C46 but you should be able to use the Microchip selection and there are a few others which you could try. The 93C46 is a EEPROM based device so does not need to be erased before you can reprogram it. Simply hitting BURN should program whatever is in the S4 RAM into the device. It does not even have any security options so it wont be protected.

If you can list the steps that you are taking to program the chip maybe I can help.

Hi Neil
first of all many thanks for your reply

I do have the data safe and transfered to the pc so thats one good thing.

just so you know i have the fairchild 93c46 connected to the programmer as follows, 32=vcc, 16=gnd, 2=cs, 24=clock, 13=DO, 21+22 DI

it read out fine using the amtel 93c46 setting on the S4 ( there was no fairchild 93c46 on the serial 3.21 library only 93c06)

I then edited and changed one hex number then hit burn on the S4, it came back with ram=xx rom=xx as my change i had made had not taken effect, i tried again and same result, just in case i did try the s4 settings, catalyst 93c46, excel 93c46, ict 93c46, microchip 93c46, national 93c46
all was exactly the same , chip would read ok but changes would not burn, thats when on the amtel 93c46 i hit function burn and 'erase' came up so pressed enter expecting nothing to change as when trying to program, but this time it had worked and erased the chip completely, and yet again no matter what chip manafacturer i try i still cannot get the data to burn back into the serial eeprom

I have now just tried again the S4 setting Microchip 93c46 and by hitting burn i get 00000 RAM=FF ROM =00 etc on all adresses that are not RAM=FF, it just wont seem to program the chip.

The chip was working fine before so cannot see that me conecting it to the programmer would have done any damage as it reads and erased fine

the fairchild 93c46 is a 8 pin smd soic device with rotated pins, i have found a data sheet on it here
http://www.meditronik.com.pl/doc/plus/93c46.pdf

I have just tried a old ST 93c46 8 pin dil device using S4 microchip 93c46 and it programs fine, so i have no idea why i cannot program the fairchild smd one

Many thanks

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

You mention connecting the chip to the programmer, I take it you do not have the S4 SERIAL module? Unfortunately we no longer have this item in stock but full details of its pin swapping can be found on our website here.

Please let me know if you have any success.

Hi Neil

no i dont have the module, but i did make myself one up from the details you kindly sent me some time ago and is exactly the same pinouts as the link in your post, all i have done is just modified it so i can program the smd devices. my connections to the device are correct and working as i was able to read the data from the device but not alter the chips contents, so have rulled out the connecting as the problem, i have also been able to program other 93c46 devices sucessfuly as well, the amtel 93c46 devices (also smd ones but not rotated pinout), as well as St devices so i also know my programmer is working, but this fairchild 93c46 still wont play ball on the S4!

it is a Fairchild device as it has the fairchild 'f' marking on it but the 93c46 is not preceded with the FM prefix which i understand from the data sheet it should be there

the device markings are as follows, firstly it has the Fairchild 'f' logo, then followed by B09AN, then on next line 93c46, then third line TEM8

'f' B09AN
93c46
TEM8

There must just be something different about this particular device as its the only one i have had problems changing the contents, i am still stumped after trying again and again on several attempts since.

The S4 has worked perfectly on any other microwire device i have programmed on it in the past and recently, it is just this particular device i cannot program and as yet have been unable to find a place that sells in the UK a rotated pin 93c46 so i can just program one and use that instead and just throw this fairchild one! i am still stuck!

any help would be good!

cheers many thanks
Andrew

Hi Neil

I have just got another batch of 7 of these ic's, and connected to the S4 they all worked flawlessley! no probs whatsoever, could change and program the data just fine.

So i found the orig chip that caused me all the problems a year ago, and now that works perfectly too! was able to program it as if no problem had ever happened!

weird or what!

Cheers
Andrew

Hello Andrew,

I am glad that you have been able to program your devices. From your description I would have to say that it was a local problem that was preventing you changing the contents of the older devices.

But I agree, it is strange.

If you encounter any problems in the future with these devices you might want to look at one of our low cost specialised programmers: MEMPro / T51Pro / PIKPro. They each cover their advertised type of device but they all equally support the serial device families such as the 93c series and many more. Its just a matter of finding which specialised programmer also covers the other devices that you work with.

Further details of these programmers can be found on our website: www.dataman.com

If you have any questions or would like further information, please let me know.

I have put together a package and method to read (possible write) the Fairchild 93C46 without any rotation.

This was based on using the MiniPro TL866 but may work with other programmers.

Hope it helps someone.
