S4 - Atmel ATF16V8 / ATF22V10 GAL Programming

Postby marklamond » 05 Oct 2025 17:35

Hi there,

I have a Dataman S4 and need to program some Atmel ATF16V8 / ATF22V10 GAL's.
According to the device list, this requires the GAL Module - does anyone have details on this? Is it a simple passive adaptor or active?

Thanks,

Hello marklamond,

Unfortunately we no longer have any of the S4 GAL modules available to sell.

They are not simple pin swap modules otherwise we would make the details available.

The Atmel ATF16V8 / ATF22V10 GAL's are supported on the Dataman-48Pro2C if you need a solution.

Hi Neil,

Any chance for higher resolution pictures or some theory of operation or schematics ?
Looks like one 74hc595 and 2x 74hc166 and some passives.

I'm in the process of restoring two S4s and programming GAL/PAL for retro computing hobby is also something I was hoping to use them for.

Cheers,

Sylvain

Hello sylvain.munaut,

I am sorry, but due to the age of this product (25+ years) this information is no longer available to me. I have had a look through our archives.

Perhaps it is worth searching online auction sites for a second hand S4 which comes with a GAL module.

I regret that I could not be of more help on this occasion.

Hi Neil,

I know the S4 is ancient, actually almost 35y since release, but it goes well with what I want to use it for :)

I was hoping that you had higher resolution of the pictures you posted. It wouldn't be perfect of course since many things are obscured but it would be a start. But as it stands I can't read the resistor values or SOT part number or even really see what trace connects where

I have been looking for a unit but so far no luck even finding someone that has one, much less finding someone willing to part with it.

Cheers,

Sylvain
