Philips P89C51RB2

Hi all,

I've got a S4 and try to burn a Philips P89C51RB2 in 44Pin PLCC. I have the MCS51 Module and an adaptor from Logical Systems (wanted the original from Dataman, but my distributor in Germany sent me the other one). I use LIB MCS-51 V1.49.
The device will not burn. The device even will not erase. It starts with "Writing All Zeroes" and continues with "Erasing" but hangs at Address 000xx. After some time (a minute or so) it will say "FAILED TO ERASE". As PROM i selcted Philips 89C51RB2. FUNC PROM says "No signature found"
Any hints are very welcome.
Anybody who already successfully used the combination S4 + MCS-51 Module for S4 and the original Datam PLCC5144 adaptor?

Best wishes to all and a successfull day.

H.Smit

Hello Mr H.Smit,

I believe your problem lies with the 44pin PLCC adaptor.

1. You have to use original Dataman DIL40 to PLCC44 converter to program the chip in S4 MCS51 module.
2. If you use Logical Systems adaptor you should go to Magnadata and ask for wiring of this adaptor. I have no idea how it is wired.

Hope this helps.

Philips P89C51RB2 and 89C51RC2

Hi,

I have got the original Dataman PLCC adaptor now, but still the device will not burn. With the other adaptor (Logical Systems) I burned an ATMEL 89C55 and this worked.

I think it might be my S4 that has a defect at a section used for Philips P89C51RB2/RC2 (I tried a brand new RC2 just now) but not for ATMEL 89C55. Any hints are welcome. Unfortunately I cannot send in my system to Dataman service at the moment, as it is used for series production of "normal" OTPs, so if I could find out and repair at my site it would be prefect.

Or is there anything a can do wrong when trying to erase (or burn) this Philips device? I just press FUNC BURN to do so. Will I have to set special values at STATUS, BOOT and BURN BITS with FUNC QUICK before trying to erase? Or maybe at other parameter locations?

I am a little bit desperate, as time runs out, and I am coding my software without chance to do tests.

Best Regards
Heino

Hi,

Our engineer has spent quite a long time looking at Philips P89C51RB2HBA PLCC44 pin devices. He has not been able to replicate any of the problems described in your query.
I strongly recommend that you return your S4 and/or MCS51 module to our offices for repair. Alternatively you can send your problematic file to us or (even better) 1-2 pieces P89C51RB2 or RC2 chips.

As for your precedure you do not seem to be doing anything wrong. For FUNC BURN just keep pressing ENTER until erase starts, indicated by the "Writing all zeroes" message.

Neil
