What does (x16) mean in the Pg4uw software/adapter name?

Postby Dataman (Neil Parker) » 10 Nov 2011 12:36

A lot of people have been asking what the (x16) suffix on certain device selections and adaptor part names mean.

In the case of normal (x8, byte) programming, all operations are done byte by byte. In the case of word (x16) programming, all operations are done by words giving faster programming times.

The difference between the following two adaptors is different pin connections meaning they are not electrically interchangeable:

(DIL48/TSOP56 ZIF 18.4mm Flash-4)
(DIL48/TSOP56 ZIF 18.4mm Flash-4(x16))

The reason why the x8 adapters have been used in the past is that such an adapter design can support more pinouts because there is only an 8 bit wide data bus and the other 8 bits can be used as supply pins or address pins.

I hope this information is useful.
